After close to 6 hours of gameplay under Windows 7 Beta, 64-bit, I finally got a game crash.  This was quite a ways into Chapter III.  I was entering Triss' house in the Trade Quarter and....got stuck.

Still way better than XP :)

My problem under Windows 7 is I can't run the game (I purchased the Enhanced version). It installs fine, but when I go to run it and click the Launch Game option, it access my DVD drive (which I have the main DVD not the Bonus DVD inserted) and it tells me I need the original DVD.

When I boot back into Vista, it works just fine. The only way I can get it to run under Windows 7 is if I use a no DVD crack, which I don't really want to do. Any ideas on how to get this working under Windows 7? I can't seem to find what the issue is. I know that Windows 7 is beta, so I hope this gets fixed when Windows 7 is finally released.

For what it's worth, my version of Witcher Enhanced is something like 1.4.5. I don't believe there is another patch out there is there? Mine is a retail version of the Enhanced version, not the original  version patched with the enhanced patches.

I have Vista 32 running with Witcher installed + EE upgrade. I'm trying out Windows 7 Beta on a second partition on the same machine - My question is, can I install Witcher + EE upgrade on this new OS ? I'm the sole owner of the machine and there is no other people play ing the game but me. Further more I can only play one copy of the game at a time and never both at the same time and eventually I will get rid of one OS and one copy of the game will be gone with it.

I ask this question first because currently I still need to acquire a new wireless adapter for Windows 7 (to do the online activation of the game - my existing adapter is not Windows 7 compatible)  and would like to know that it works before pulling the trigger. Yep there is mulah involved so I got to be thorough.

Many tks.

can't you just run that installed game directly from the other partition? it works for me
but if this is a digital download then this might need an actual install in Windows 7

That would be very convenient, but these two booting partitions don't see each others.

My computer -> Manage -> Disk management -> right click on the other partition -> Assign drive letter  ;)

oh, be sure to get this patch too: http://support.micro....aspx/kb/961367 before using any other partition ;)

Oy, I still am thinking like it's Linux 10 yrs ago or Windows 3.1 15 yrs ago where everything needed a 3rd party tool or had to mount via command line and extremely clunky while they actually evolved quite a bit. You're right of course, I can use this built in Windows utility painlessly to see the other partition and able to run Witcher from across partitions. A big thank! Problem solved.

I was wondering if anyone managed to get the witcher enhanced edition working under windows 7.
The game installs fine, but it won't run because it thinks that it's not really in the dvd drive.  Although it does work under vista on the same computer.  Any thoughts?

I got Witcher EE (Free upgrade download)  installed originally under Vista 32 - Then I installed Win 7 - 64 bit on a different partition and was able to run it across the partitions. In general it runs fine, except when in the interactive interface with NPC (gifting) I experienced hangs consistently. Win 7- 64 runs Witcher a tad faster than Vista 32, I thought it would be more stable because I added an extra 2GB RAM just for that purpose but got into the interactive GUI hangs really deflated that hope. I'm interested in what you and others find about this GUI hangs and whether there is a workaround.

Greetings.

I recently purchased the Enhanced Edition from a local store. This is the v1.4 retail, which as I understand does not require patching presently.

As with the poster some replies above, I am using the Windows 7 Beta operation system. Rather than having a problem patching (since I'm not, you know, patching), the game installs fine, and the launcher runs as normal. However, when I attempt to start the game, it tells me the insert the game DVD, which I assure you is securely located inside the DVD drive.

Browsing older replies, I gathered that the 1.4 patch has certain drivers which allow operation on SATA discs where the game would not previously work. The DVD drive in use is not SATA, but the hard drive the game is installed to is. Perhaps these additional drivers will not work in W7?

On a whim, I tried to run the game in XPSP2 compatibility mode and got the same message.

The same disc has worked fine in both Windows Vista Home Premium 32b and Vista Ultimate 64b systems, so I am confident it's not a physical disc problem.

Any advice?

Thanks.

I have, in fact, read the entire FAQ (both, actually) and installed that hotfix. It still asks for the DVD.

I also just tried running the main game executable (from /system) as administrator and in Vista and in XPSP2 compatibility mode. Same message.

I noticed a previous poster (after being completely confused when my post magically changed threads) had no trouble installing and playing the game from the non EE discs. So what's different between the original and the EE? Could the Tages fix be causing the drive to not be seen by the game?

this is the right thread... as this BETA product is not supported, not even by Microsoft

the original version ( 2007 ) + patch does not need the DVD in drive, as the owners already had in in for a year

Enhanced Edition DVD install needs it

try the TAGES un/reinstall, don't use any dvd emulation software...and pray... or something... if it does not work you're basically on your own, sorry

contact TAGES/Microsoft if it does not work....

That's a terrible answer.
I'm having the exact same problem as Maelfactor, and like him I've taken all the steps I could find. Nothing's worked, and I'm left with a game I can't use. Now, I know that Win 7 is in beta. But, as a fellow developer in the game industry, I know that Win 7 is coming, and coming fast. It's only good sense that you guys should be looking into it, and in particular looking to get your game working on it. I understand that things are no doubt busy, but with about 2.5 million downloads for Win 7, the near universal revulsion towards Vista, and 7's good buzz, I'd think that it might be time to look into getting a patch up sooner rather then later.

I also have the same problem, but, I'm trying to run it on Windows 7 beta.  Have tried everything  I can think of, including deleting the Tages protection and installing a newer version.  Running setup from the disk, or starting by the .exe file and not the launcher still has the same results.  Have put all known patchs on the game also.  Ran great on xp.  There is definately a Vista problem somewhere (Windows 7 is based on Vista).  I believe it has something to do with the Tages protection scheme and Vista.
