this cold be a though fight. but if you chose to save the witch she will hill you a few times.
then you need to distroy all the weak monsters because at some time they will stop coming
and then take a swalow potion and attack the beast with the strong stile thats how it worked for me ;) ;D
sory for my english!

So, first of all, use Igni. When barghests are burning, run away (not to close to fire!). Drink one Swallow and one potion which is recovering energy. If barghests follow you, and you cant drink potions because they are attacking, use Igni again and run a lot (i waited until they die ), if they are far enough, then drink potions. It is very important to kill Beast as fast as it is possible - no beats = no barghests. Use Aard on Beast, if it is laying and not getting up, just finish it with one of finishing moves (it is easiest way to kill it). If it not works, run away for energy recovery (if you dont have enough to use aard), and when you are able to, use this sign again on beast until  you can killl it. If barghests (now they should have small amount of life - you fired them up on the beginning) are are surrounding you, use group attack to kill as much as possible and run away. It works for me.

Fought the beast with the groupstyle, slaying all the surrounding barghests and interupting it with the knockback spell. Eventually i got lucky because Abigail healed a lot.

Okay, now I'm here as well and there is just no chance at all that I can beat this, is there a cheat or something? It takes around 30 seconds before I die and about 1 - 2 minutes in loading time / skipping through the cutscene time, which makes the whole thing very frustrating. The absurdely long stun that the beast does on you is enough to take 80% of my health which pretty much makes the fight completely impossible.

Just got there as well - hohum. Love the game, really, but placing this scene behind a dialogue is certainly one of the less clever design decisions of The Witcher.

Reloaded 3 or 4 times now, but so far no luck. Quite a difficulty spike, too - it's the first (and second, third and fourth) time I died in the game (on normal).

You can kill Beast without fighting. Use Aard (if beats is standing up after that, run away until energy bar is yellow and try again), when it is unconscious just finish it. Surronding barghests are easy to kill with using Ugni and group style. Oh, and Abigail is not dead after falling on the ground. She stands up after killing the beast.

That just doesn't work for me, I use Aard on him so he falls down and then click on him in hopes of doing something, but I just stand there like an idiot while the other dogs hit me, plus the beast is only down for like a second, not much time to do anything. Is there a special style I have to use for anything to happend or?

Hmm... Try to kill some barghests firts. Use Igni on them and run away (try to drink swallow and that which is filling energy bar faster). Dont get surrounded. Jump back when it is necessary. Use only group style on barghests, and fast style on Beats. When its health bar is half-empty, use Aard (I had second lvl and some upgrades of this sign). If your aard is too weak, try to hit Beast few times, run away until your health bar condition is good and then hit it again until it is dead.

It is best to consume the potion swallow when the fight starts. Also, focus your attacks on the beast, ignore the barghests. The sign of Aard should knock down the beast if his health is less than 50%.

At Hard, this fight is next to impossible. I had some 30-40 attempts and not one have I come close to beating the mut. Luckily, by raping my spacebar, I managed to squeeze a savegame inbetween the cutscene and the fight.

Unluckily, I have no Swallow potions available for the fight, but seeing how fast I die, I doubt the few Vitality points restored would benefit. Abigail always dies about 3-5 seconds into the fight, there is absolutely no way of keeping her alive (or conscious for that matter). I take a Blizzard potion at the start, wich helps a great deal in evading a bunch of the attacks of the Barghests, but it seems to have no effect on the Beast's attacks. He usually stuns me before I can finish the first combo (Group style), and at that point I'll loose 60-70% of my vitality due to every damned dog nibbling on me. Knockbacks seem to have no effect either. I'm getting quite desperate here. Any help would be appreciated. I just hope I don't have to dig into my savegames to re-prepare for the fight and loose hours of playtime.

Ah yes, and is there any way to reduce difficulty during gameplay? I'd love to just lower it to Medium, get over with it, and put it back to Hard. It'll take a bit of the fun away, but being stuck for ages is no fun either :-P

Thanks in advance!

@Madmartigan:

I think you should go back a few savegames (easy since the game autosaves a lot), and prepare quite a few potions and an oil/grindstone. The fight isn't easy on normal, most people'll need the preparations on normal already. I'd go as far as to say that being fully buffed is mandatory for defeating it on hard. (like it should, imo)

If you set the difficulty to hard, I highly recommend you do all the side quests, if not most of them. You will really need the extra experience. And like I said, use swallow before you start the fight. If your health drops dangerously low, run away and keep running until it's back up. Then go fight again.

I too am stuck at this point.
Im about ready to throw the game out the window.
The last cutscene was awesome,
but I've lost count of how many times I died on the beast section.
This is really poorly balanced.

Does anyone have a god mode cheat?
Im ready for that, I just want to move on.

Here are some tips and trick when you start Chapter 1... (may contain minor spoilers)

1. Enable the ability Monster Lore (Intelligence). You will be able to complete side quests that require ingredients found in the remains of monsters. Side quests provide a lot of experience points.
2. Enable the abilities that add damage points, pain points and bleeding points to your attacks. Do not enable abilities that work only in special circumstances (drunk, low health, night, etc.).
3. Do not enhance your silver sword attacks. You will not get a silver sword in Chapter 1.
4. Gather ingredients to make potions. The potions swallow, blizzard and thunderbolt are quite useful, especially for a boss fight.
5. Do not buy food or weapons yet.
6. Side quests are your friends. You gain at least 2 levels of experience (6 bronze talents) when you complete most of the side quests in Chapter 1.
7. Personal choice: boost the sign of Aard. It is very useful against the boss of Chapter 1.

Thanks for the advise, god mode asside going back and replaying a fair bit of the game seems to be the only option.
Apparently I have made the 'wrong' choices when upgrading my character.

As much as I am enjoying many other aspects of the witcher, its been a long time since a game has made me so angry from getting stuck. Its still very early in the game and Im playing on normal.

[Minor spoiler]
Imaginos, yes it is.
[/Minor spoiler]

Thanks for the advice everyone. Finally managed to take him down, but it came down to luck in the end after all, a few lucky group style blows killed every Barghest, and the first Aard sign I used knocked the Beast down, so I could finish him.
