I really hate looking for hints, but this one had me going. The source of my frustration was "wayfarer stone". I had no idea what a wayfarer stone was. I saw a couple of them in the swamp and just ignored them. However, having finished everything in the swamp, I went back to the Striga cave to look for this Saint's tomb. Well, I Aard/Igni'd stuff in the big room to the left. I didn't realize that it was Aard/Aard/Igni. Fine, so I have no idea what a wayfarer stone is as nobody has explained it to me. In addition, I got no feedback whenever I hit it with Aard/Igni.

So, in the end, I look up the hint, go back, blast it with Aard and it says "that combination didn't work". So, it takes three shots to get feedback. Other than that, there was no visual feedback at all for the first two, so I figured nothing was happening.

Anyhow, congrats to everyone who figured that out on your own.

If you talk to the blacksmith, he'll give you a hint about what combination to use.

I've made three new adventures for TW1; you can get them at corylea.com/.

I've also made a bunch of mods that fix bugs, kill annoyances or tweak gameplay; you can get those at the Witcher Nexus.

Wiki it.
On my last time around (1.3) I accidently used the wrong stone and ended up in the Dwarven section instead.  Got the bifurbrecator (or whatever) by accident.  Oops.  Back to boxing cave stone and off to get the Sorcerer's potion...

I had no problems completing the quest with help. I was just disappointed that I ran around for so long trying to figure out what to use.

From the Order smith's clues, it was easy to figure out that I was supposed to use Aard/Igni, I just had no idea what to use it on!

In the end, I think it was probably a limitation of the engine to provide some sort of feedback for each sign cast on the wayfarer stones. That would have been all I need to realize that "hey, something is happening when I use a sign on these", this must be what the smith was talking about.

I am stuck here.  I used igni/igni/aard to get to the dwarf crypt, got the bifurcator but now can't get out of the crypt!  I have tried igni/igni/aard again but it doesn't work.  Any suggestions please?

Igni, Igni, Aard should work.  Sometimes the Wayfarer's Stone registers Signs you cast during battle, so when you think you're doing the first sign of the combination, it's actually reading it as the second or third sign.  Have you cast any signs in that room besides the ones to work the stone?

Corylea is right .. the game sometimes seems to remember the last sign (or 2) that you cast and counts them in your attempt at the stone.

you can try to be systematic. Assume it remembered one, try going from there (it can only be one of two) ... if it doesn't work, reload and try a different combo . Worst case scenario, assume it remembered 2 signs and try again.

I can't recall if there is a message when you complete an unsuccessful try, but pause between each sign you cast (the speed / interval between signs is not an issue) and see if there is some message. If so, that will pinpoint when a "fresh" cycle starts and you can use the correct combination without a problem.

it's happened to me and i've always been able to get out (or in!)

Sorted it by going back a couple of save games and it worked fine.
Thanks

I cleared all the wayfarer destinations this time round for fun:

Striga Crypt - Order Path
Aard-Aard-Igni

Old Mine - Scoa-tel Path
Aard-Igni-Aard

Refugee Cave - Neutral Path
Igni-Igni-Aard

Somebody let me know if I got the combinations wrong here pls.

OKay! Same problem :whatthe: I see these damn wayfarer stones in bunch a different places and don't have a clue what they are about until I talk to some hermit or someone that tells me to use two of wind and one of fire. So, I'm looking for the armor peices and manage to get to some crypt using Aard twice and Igni once after a few tries cause like Corylea says: if you were just in a battle before trying it, the game counts your sign use as first, second, and third attempts, which screws it all up. Anywho, I'm in this crypt and found what I'm looking for and can't get the hell outta there. Aard twice and Igni once over and over again after using max endurance increase potion (forget name) and Tawny owl until i'm blue in the face. That stupid hermit could of told me to use reverse order to get back out >:( I figured okay reverse order makes sense--didn't work (must of done it wrong) so, I'm trying every combo and every sign to no avail until I ran out of options. Tried reverse order again--Igni twice and Aard once. Worked! :whatthe: I gave up on those stones after that. No way in hell I was going to take the chance of winding up somewhere I couldn't get out of again. I wonder what All I missed :hmmm: Gotta say--this was one of the most frustrating points in the game. :-\
