Installing the Enhanced Edition from DVD

24.09.2008 @ 19:03 #21

Hope someone can help me out or at least let me know if others are experiencing the same problem.

I am new to this game and just bought the Enhanced Edition DVD retail set yesterday.  First disc installs no problem but when the prompt comes up to install the second disc the install locks and freezes.  I've tried a few times and it just doesn't see the bonus disc regardless if I press the ok button or let it try to find and continue automatically.  It's not reading the second disc or is getting hung up trying to.  Really disappointed at the moment and cannont play the game, obviously.

The game is installed so far from the first disc but is missing tons of data that are present on the bonus disc, that is text, etc. etc.

Any help anyone? :(

When the prompt comes up, try letting the drive spin all the way down before putting the bonus disc in the drive, then try letting the drive spin all the way up, before hitting the next or install button.
Have you tried running the .exe on the second disc directly from the disc? Sometimes this is the option, especially if the disc's copy protection and the drive isn't very friendly toward each other.

It is possible that you will need to clean the disc with a soft clean cloth (a linen cloth for example) so that any scratches on the disc are evened out.

Alternatively you can download the bonus content for free, just register the game, then you can get the bonus content.

Yesterday I went to the shop again and wanted to return my corrupted copy, they gave me a new copy after checking the dvd. And now, with the new dvd, the same problem happened. Now I'm convinced, that the early shippings of the german retail copies were indeed bugged.

I think you are correct but mine is a US version.  It's obviously bugged.  It's not a dirty disc or letting the dvd player spin all the way up or down, there is apparently a problem on the bonus disc with the installer.  I have no problems with any other game software or otherwise, installers work fine, autorun works fine for everything else.

Again, the first disc works fine, installs up to the prompt, i get the prompt for the bonus disc, insert, hit ok and .....freeze.  dvd spins down, background goes white, no dice.  I want to take mine back and get another copy too but I'm afraid I know that without a new shipment I'm going to be in the same boat.  Maybe I should try to return it for something else.

Oh well, without a support patch or something for install there is nothing I can do right now but be mad about lost $$$ for something that doesn't work.

I'm taking it back today for a replacement and I'll let you know if anything changes here.

Well folks,

I'm sad to report that it's a big no go.  Took it back, got a replacement copy and....same old song and dance.  It won't install or even see the bonus disc exactly the same problem as with the first ones I had.  Prompt comes up, I insert the disc, hit ok and freezola.

Sure would like some help or direction here on what's going on.  I would like a confirmation that it's a bad batch that was shipped and that something will be done to either fix the problem or replace our discs or something.

As of now it's completely broken.

All you guys seem to be having the same kind of problems as with registered owners of the original game who downloaded the upgraded program as a patch.
Some people seem to have succeeded in completing the install and have played the game OK. Ive read this thread in the hope that the retail version would work without any problems,
but it looks like familiar ground to me.
Everything downloads OK, but the install either crashes or brings up error screens, and some of those who succeed in installing it, get a crash when they start the game.
This is a very flawed release of an upgraded game which is a great shame because the original game was a beauty. Get the original release if you can, and hopefully the
upgraded version will one day work. Don't hold your breath though, it may be a while.

I live in the United States and purchased the Import Version of the Enhanced Edition. Disc 1 installs just fine. However when it asks me to insert the Bonus Disc, my drive acts as if the bonus disc does not exist. I have installed other programs to test the drive, and they install just fine. Is there some problem with the bonus disc?

have loaded various other software applications using my DVD drive today and they all worked with no problem. Only the Witcher Enhanced Edition bonus disc seems to be unrecognized by my drive. I have the UK Import version. Has anyone else observed this problem? If so, has anyone found a solution?

Hi,
Bit of a continuation of the CRC errors (I've been through the threads/FAQ's with no luck).  More details below.

Every time I try to install the new Witcher Enhanced Edition I get a cyclic redundancy check failure (CRC error) in data3.cab this usually happens around outro.bik, althought I've seen it on intro.bik as well.
I've exchanged the DVD and the problem still occurs, so it's not that.  Even though I'm running XP SP3 I can't choose to ignore the error message, all I can do is press ok and then the installer quits.  I've tried installing in safe mode (same problem), and while copying the DVD contents to my PC I get the same error (again with no ignore option).  I've also tried uninstalling my antivirus programs (just started trialling Norton 360, I was using AVG/A-squared/Adaware before).

The exact error is:
Cannot copy data3: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).  thats the error from trying to copy the DVD to my HD, the one while installing is very similar though

Comp specs/other relevant things::
Intel Q6600,
Asustek P5KR,
Corsair 2GB DDR2-800,
EVGA Geforce 8800GT 512,
Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme,
Asustek 1814BLT SATA DVD Writer,
Seagate Barracuda 500GB (x2),
Corsair 620W PSU,
Win XP Home (up to date)
Daemon (which is disabled/not running while I install)
Norton 360 v2.0 (free OEM on promo)

Any other info needed please let me know, I'll keep searching and trying out new solutions.
Thanks!

Alright, thanks for the views (a few more suggestions wouldn't hurt though!  :))

Just a quick update on what I've tried since I launched this thread:
1)  Further installs in windows and safe mode.
2)  Disabling Norton
3)  copying to C:/
4)  Firmware updates
5)  Checked the DVD for scratches
6)  Deleting atapi.sys then reboot (did a windows search and deleted all six it discovered)

I really am running out of options.  I'll try another install in safe mode tomorrow evening (in about 20hrs from this post).  If anyone has any suggestions for me (ANYTHING!)  please let me know.
I'm going to try borrowing a mates copy of the game and see if it works as well for me as it did with him.

thanks for listening!

Most common reasons for CRC errors are:

1.  During the transmission of the file it became corrupt or bad
2. The file was sent inappropriately
3. The device being opened from is bad or contains errors
4. The file itself is bad or the program attempting to open the file is bad.

I had that problem a few times with other games, try these solutions:
1. Check if your Windows Partition (usually C:) have enough free disk space
2. Try copying the entire disk on hard drive and then start the install (use nero to copy entire disk, and daemon tools to insert .nrg file, then start install)
3. Also try to install at any other comp (try to find another windows version), and see what happens.

btw i also had problems with intro and outro movies (usually corrupted).

If i remember any more ill post them.
Try these and tell me the results, im also interested in CRC errors solution.
An oren wouldn't hurt :)

An update:

I've got tons of room available (200+GB).
While copying using nero it came up with an error as below:
8:12:38 PM    Creating the image for burning
8:23:33 PM    Error reading data
8:23:33 PM    Unrecoverable read error at LBA 1829344
8:23:33 PM    Reading disc failure

I'm now off to try installing on another computer.  A friend has offered to burn an iso from his and let me install using that... guess I might have to.

I try to install the game, (Enhanced Edition) Then when it asks for the Disc 2, i change the DVD ,and...IT doesnt read it ,just keeps on sayind no dvd inserted,  :-[ I tried other dvd's and they work.
Now, I even tried to install the game from other copy ( As it refuses to install from my copy), no luck still doesnt read this dvd!?
Any help!?

And if it might be because of my computer, i running...

So my computer should be able to run this.. I have the newest drivers ,if it's because of that.

At about 85% installation process I get an error:

Feature Tranfer Error
Feature: AUT
Component: AUT
File: E:\Data5.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

It happens every time I try installing the game. I have the original copy of the game, not anything else. Please help?

That means one of three things.  First, easiest, and most common, it's a dirty disk, or is already badly scratched (or may have been defective when produced, although that's rare).

Second, and only relatively common, the lens inside the drive is dirty.

Third, the least common source, is a drive that is failing.

So does that mean I'm screwed? Because the drive is relatively new and the CD hasn't been touched for something like 6 monthes, all the while it was in a CD case...

Are there any solutions to said options?
