[Act IV] Tough-guy wraiths in "King of the Wild Hunt"

there is no recipe in the game ... so not likely, but maybe ... you'd have to experiment and as you can only get one vial of it, you'd have to save and reload many, many times for only the possibility of making a useful potion.
maybe in The Witcher 2 there will be a use for them ;)

I killed the King of the wild hunt. NOT REALLY--i mean he appears to die but really he just gives up and goes away cause there's another time you will face him. When I was at this point at the altar, I didn't understand what the mandrake root was doing. I just knew that the hermit told me to use it here. I just kept fighting after using it the first time and not knowing I was supposed to keep using it. But, I had to drink a crapload of potions to the point of almost too much toxicity and I had been building my Silver Sword Group Style and Str. Stam. & Dxt. attributes early on.
Ask not what your country can do for YOU but, what YOU can do for your country.

You don't need to kill the King of the Wild Hunt. The quest is finished when you kill the wraiths and return to the hermit. You will get a special final encounter with the King later in the game ;)
I can see what you see not, Visions milky then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone, whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be, shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind – cast down into the Halls of the Blind…

you are actually intended to keep him away with the mandrake root in the lantern ... not fight him. That said, it was reported once before that under some circumstances (possibly the result of unique and not consistently reliable circumstances) ... a player did kill the king of the wild hunt and get the elusive "vapors of the Hunt" mutagen.

Note that decent investment into the right skill trees and you won't have to waste Mandrake on the altar. Simply blast repeatedly with Aard to keep the devils at bay.
That combined with a bit of swordplay and mission accomplished. Really, this quest isn't hard.

This is mainly because the king merely summons 3 phantoms one after the other. Maybe you should take care not to wake nearby Wyerns  But Igni also roasts everything who isn't protected by asbestos :teeth:

This is my 3rd time through this game. It has NEVER been this difficult to defeat the wild hunt before. I'm on Level 28 and I have these potions: wolverine, blizzard, maribor forest, tawny owl, petri's philter, white radcliffe's decoction. I've noticed I cannot blast with Igni, which I have up to the silver level. I'm frustrated. What have others done?

This is the quest the Hermit gives you in Chapter 4?
It's crucial to follow his advice about putting mandrake in the fire, so the King won't come and hit you, too.
I usually hit one wraith then run away, getting that wraith to chase me a distance from the others. I kill that wraith, then go back for another one. As far as I can tell, moving around a lot is the key -- if you let them surround you and all hit you at once, Geralt becomes overcome and can't hit back, and one gets dead very quickly that way.
Actually, moving around a lot seems to be the key to a lot of difficult fights -- Geralt is faster than just about everyone/everything in the game, so running can buy you time to drink a potion or heal up, plus it can let you do the hit-run-hit-run tactic, which means that Geralt gets to hit the foe, and the foe doesn't get to hit back. It can be annoying -- I much prefer to stand my ground and just whack everything within reach -- but sometimes even Geralt has to run. :-)

If you are refering to Act IV's hermit quest:
In my experience I normally have no trouble taking on all the spectres at once with Group Style, as long as I use mandrake and keep the King at bay.
If you are taking a beating, than hit-and-run is a good tactic. Unless you have a powerful Igni attack, concentrate on using Aard to keep other spectres at bay and pick them off individually. Full Moon is one potion you have neglected to mention, which should increase your survivability. Blizzard is useful here too. Power up your blade with a Perun rune stone (if you have one / the cash for one), or oil with spectre oil.
If after all your attempts to defeat them come up dry, grind the fields and crypts and level up your character some more. Ideally you should be past level 30 to attempt this quest (especially on Hard).

It's funny, on my first run through I don't remember having any trouble with this quest, but yesterday I was playing it and for some reason it was incredibly hard. I could barely even hit the wraiths!
I put some upgrades into silver sword - fast style and suddenly it was easy again

Normal wraiths themselves are sometimes irritatingly agile enough to dodge even the simplest attacks. The Wild Hunt are no exception.
Upgrading your talents to give yourself a higher attack chance is just one option to aid your mission.

Yes, fast style silver will make it .When your group style is quite advanced you can use group style as well versus several wraiths ;)
