[ACT II] Problem with story

First of all let me point out that the story is what drives this game, so you'll keep running into problems if you choose not to follow it. Talk to people, check the notes in your journal, follow the hints. If you're completely stuck, try the wiki, which has a lot of information.
You will have all five signs by the end of Chapter 2. Exactly what's up with the Salamanders is a long story, which will be made clear during the course of the game, so I won't spoil anything here yet. Regarding the silver sword, just follow the hints in your journal, and you will find out what you must know about it.

No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulderblades will seriously cramp his style.

The Salamandras are part of the main story. You can't avoid it ;) Act II quest At the top of that page you can look for primary quests (e.G. Salamandra) and secondary quests and others. If you don't want to lose the focus I recommand to cast a glance at the quests.
I can see what you see not, Visions milky then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone, whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be, shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind – cast down into the Halls of the Blind…

Sorry mate, but nearly everything is explained in the story - where the sword came from, why you need it, that sort of thing. A hell of a lot of the quests that you do are story driven as well, so I strongly recommend you start following along with it. And then you can debate on the forums about certain bits of it like everyone else ;D
