Somewhere along the line I picked up a yellow meteorite sword, which was pretty good, and I also had Gwalhir, which I've been using since Chapter 2.  I also just dropped the Makakman Rune sword, which I think I got from the Mercenary Captain in the Swamp Cemetary.

Now I've been gifted with D'yabel, and I can't work out which sword is the best of the four.

Any thoughts?  In my last game I hung on to Gwalhir, but as you get it so early in the game I suspect it isn;t the best one.

Gwalhir in ACT II?  0_o from where? from who? it seems to be a bug imo..

afaik, 3 - red meteorite is best one can get along with Harval, until ACT IV, when one gets Gvalhir, and then Gvalc`hir in act V. D`yaebl is just like Harvall, no match for G-swords ;>

The one you dropped - The Mahakaman Rune Sihill - 100% damage -  for steel.

Moonblade - 100% damage - for silver.

I've kept Gwalheir, and the Mahakman blade, and of course my blade from the Lady.  I mised the Mooblade, though.  Next time I'll pick that one.

my sword choices are here

but i have to agree about Gwalhir ... are you sure you didn't mean Harvall (from the messenger's corpse on wyvern island) ?, that's the "other" steel sword in Act II

No, of course I had already traded in the sword from the messenger in the Swamp --  I do get my swords all mixed up.

In the end I suppose it doesn't really matter which sword you take, does it?  In this game my magic skills were so high and I had such a wicked collection of oils and potions that I didn't even need a sword for either the Koschi....Koski...the Big Monster Kikimore in Chapter five (Pain Symbol, plus Quen) or for the GM fight (Igni, Aard) at the end.

Yeah, that's my reason to keep a sword, too, and I'm very angry, - what's his englisch name? - Rittersporn - isn't travelling after me with my whole inventory all the time. - Well, that would most likely just be another one to save constantly out of trouble. But he could at least sit somewhere in a cave... where I could get my stuff from him...

Rittersporn is Dandelion in English :) ... there is a mod (possibly several -- info) to deal with that little inventory problem if you like to use mods ...

Yes, I found that annoying, too - finally the guy is actually useful for the first time since he showed up, and then you can't reach him for most of the chapter. And no, I don't like Dandelion ;)

I kept all the swords I got during the game (in storage, obviously), because they made a nice collection. Plus, once you get the excellent leather jacket, you don't really need money any more, so there's no point in selling them. I use Gwalhir and (of course) Aerondight and keep the rest for decoration. And just for the record, I don't think you can get Gwalhir in Chapter 2, either ;)
No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulderblades will seriously cramp his style.

I'm somewhere in the middle of Act V having just cured Adda if her curse. I'm currently using Aerondight & Gwalheir (sp) which I picked up in Act IV.
The sword that Velerad gave me as a reward can't compare to what I have, so I'll sell it when I get back to Old Vizima.
Problem is, I can't decide between Gwalheir & the Mahakaman Rune sihill from the dentist. One has 50% damage + critical effects, the other 100% damage but but penetrates opponent's armour. I guess this means that the game ignores opponent's armour when calculating damage?
For silver swords, I again have a tough choice between Aerondight & the Moonblade. It's 60% damage + critical damage vs 100% damage and that's it.

What would you recommend I keep?

Well, I feel your pain over what silver one to keep - I used to keep Aerodight, and get the Mahakaman Rune Sihill reward from the Royal Huntsman.
These days, I stash my Aerodight with Dandelion before leaving the dock in favour of my old Rune Silver and upgrade to Moonblade ASAP.  I hold some sentimentality for the Aeordight, but find the Moonblade's extra damage preferable.  Get rid of the 'ol Gwailhir!  Compared with a Sihill, it is worthless.  The armor ignore comes in handy versus the Greater Brothers, and any extra effects you want on the blade can be added with your oils.
Don't blame the dynamite if you can't light the fuse!

Be kind and reward those helpful with Orens!

I picked up the Harvell sword in Act 3 and have a blue metoerite sword currently, forgotten which one but have had it for most of game-i may have picked up one that seemed stronger at one point than the original Rusty Sword.  I also have the Deithwen sp? an elven ceremonial sword...dont know which to keep and i have 3 red meteorite i want to forge one of these 2 latter swords with.  Should i go with the Harvell and does it have witcher fighting styles with it as i dont think i read that in looking at its skill set?  Thanks fr your advice Im about to head in to Act 4 and want to forge before i get there...

Witcher fighting styles can be used with any sword in the game.
IMO Harvall is better than any meteorite sword you can forge. If I were you I'd save the money & use Harvall into Act IV, where you have the option of getting an even better steel sword early on in the Act, if you have the orens.
Ditch the ceremonial sword. Compare the stats (mouse over the swords in inventory screen) and you'll see the difference.

Thanks for the advice. Harvall it is then.  Ill hold on to the red meteorite for the better sword in future.  I guess ill sell the current sword that has the blue meteorite forged in to it then and the Ceremonial Sword-Deithwan too?  I just read if you buy the Excellent Jacket you dont have to worry about much in terms of protection or buying things anymore...except potion bases maybe...

Is this true? What do you get for that 5000 oren jkt, I thought it was a bit of a ripoff pricewise and didnt want to part w/my orens since the orens dont come easy...Im not in to dressing Geralt up and having him look a certain way-however, if the jkt renders him 100% protected from all swords and such...maybe thats something to consider...for ex, does it keep Geralt from being sapped of Vitality every time he goes in to a sword fight w/enemies attacking him?  Of course, monsters would be different as they arent dueling him, so potions should still be needed....thoughts?

The armour is rather sparse in the game, so I bought the excellent leather jacket as soon as I could afford it.
Later on (much, much later on) you have a quest which would ultimately net you the best witcher armour in the game.

The excellent leather jacket doesn't make Geralt invulnerable  ;) You need potions now as before but the jacket gives him more protection and... you have 2 quickslots for potions.
I can see what you see not, Visions milky then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone, whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be, shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind – cast down into the Halls of the Blind…
